Astrology 360: Water Ascendants/Rising Signs

Our Ascendant or rising sign is the mask we wear, the external appearance or personality, and the first impression we give to others. It is often but not necessarily different from our sun sign, which represents our essential nature and true character. The ascendant can display automatic responses to our environment, especially when we are distracted, and these may give people a distorted impression of who we “really” are. For example, a person with Scorpio rising may at first glance seem stand-offish, intense and even a bit intimidating, but if the person’s sun is in… let’s say Gemini, the moment they open their mouths, your first impression may fade away to reveal someone unexpectedly open, chatty and gregarious.

Cancer Ascendant Case Study

Cancer is nurturing, emotional, protective, self-contained, family-oriented; ruled by the Moon, it is embodied by the maternal archetype.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is an American actress, the daughter of Jon Voigt although the two have been estranged off and on throughout her life. She has received three Golden Globe Awards and one Academy Award for her work in films. She is also Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency and she promotes and works with a number of other humanitarian organizations throughout the world, notably those involved with helping refugees, women and children.

She and actor Brad Pitt have three adopted children from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam, as well as three biological children. In 2013, she discovered through DNA testing that she carried an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and, having lost her own mother and grandmother to the disease, underwent a double mastectomy as a preventative measure.

She took out a New York Times editorial explaining the apparently sudden and extreme decision:

“I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience… My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer… And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman.”

Scorpio Rising

Something about them tells the world they are not to be pushed around. Their manner commands respect, and in some cases, fear. Can be quiet or loud, but they always seem powerful and determined. Intimidating to some, intriguing to others; in dealings with other people, they look for answers by reading between the lines. Value their privacy, bordering on paranoia. (CafeAstrology.com)

Pisces Rising

They come across as artists and lovers of peace, but their open minds and hearts give them a chameleon-like persona. Often quiet and shy, another day may find them talkative and passionate. They are hugely impressionable, have a dreamy disposition, and project a soft-hearted personality. (CafeAstrology.com)
